Epoxy Floor Coating Questions, Answered

The questions Melissa homeowners and business owners ask most, in plain English.

Cost and Estimates

How much does a floor coating cost?

Floor coatings start at $6 per square foot. The free estimate looks at your actual floor, so you know your own number before you decide.

Is the estimate really free?

Yes, and you are under no obligation afterward. Take it, compare it, think it over.

What should I have ready when I call?

Which room, roughly how big ("two-car garage" is fine), what you use it for and anything you have noticed on the concrete, like cracks or old paint.

Preparing the Floor

Why does concrete need to be ground first?

A slab's smooth top layer gives resin very little to hold on to. Grinding roughens that layer away, giving the coating a grip instead of a slick surface it may later peel from.

Can cracks be repaired before coating?

Most small cracks and pits can be filled and leveled first. They may still be faintly visible, depending on the finish, and a crack that is still moving should be looked at before coating.

Can you coat over old paint or epoxy?

Often, once loose or failing material has been removed. What is already on the floor is one of the first things to mention, since it changes the amount of prep.

How long should new concrete cure?

A common rule is at least 28 days. Exact timing depends on the slab and the products being used.

Living With the Floor

Will hot tires damage the coating?

A properly bonded system with the right topcoat is built to resist hot tire pickup. Thin garage paints are the products best known for lifting under tires.

Is a coated floor slippery?

Smooth gloss can be slick when wet. Flake adds some texture, and grip additives can be mixed into the topcoat for garages, entries and other damp areas.

How do I clean it?

Dust mop or sweep regularly, then use a damp mop with a mild cleaner. Wipe up chemicals and oil rather than leaving them to sit, and skip harsh acids.

How soon can I use the floor again?

It depends on the products, the temperature and whether you are walking or parking on it. Vehicles usually wait longer than foot traffic, and you will get the specific timing for your floor before work starts.

Finishes

What is the difference between flake and metallic?

Flake is a speckled layer of colored chips that hides dust and adds texture. Metallic is a smooth, swirled, glossy finish that looks more like liquid stone.

Can I pick my own colors?

Yes. Flake blends and metallic pigments come in a wide range, and it helps to look at samples in the actual room, since garage lighting changes how colors read.

Do you coat commercial floors?

Yes. Estimates are available for shops, showrooms, offices and other commercial concrete floors.
